Alano Miller has built a dynamic career as a versatile actor who has moved effortlessly form one genre to another, shining in comedy and drama, film, television and theater. He can next be seen in a strong supporting role in Focus Features’ Loving. Co-starring alongside Joel Edgerton, Michael Shannon, Ruth Negga and Nick Kroll the film tells the true story of Richard (Edgerton) and Mildred (Negga) Loving, an interracial couple, who were sentenced to prison in Virginia in 1958 for getting married. This story comes to the big screen from writer-director Jeff Nichols. The film is slated for release November 2016.
Most recently, Miller was seen co-starring in Misha Green and Joe Pokaski’s new highly acclaimed period drama “Underground” opposite Christopher Meloni, Jurnee Smollett-Bell, Aldis Hodge, Jessica De Gouw and Jussie Smollett. Miller stars as ‘Cato’ a striking, cunning and oddly charismatic slave on a Georgia plantation who is despised and feared by the other slaves. Daniel Fienberg of The Hollywood Reporter described Miller as “the best of the supporting escapees” and Neil Genzlinger of The New York Times described his performance as “Fabulous.” “Underground” follows a group of slaves who plan a daring escape from a plantation to cross the 600 miles to freedom. They are aided along the way by a secret abolitionist couple running a station on the Underground Railroad, as they evade those tasked with bringing them back, dead or alive. “Underground” premiered on WGN America on Wednesday, March 9th and the network is currently rerunning the first season.
Miller was recently featured on the cover of The Hollywood Reporter Magazine as one of the “30 Best Supporting Actors To Watch Out For In 2016” for his work on “Underground.”
Miller was born the son of an architect and an educator, who greatly influenced his development and artistic direction. Miller was born in Orlando, Florida and is the youngest of eight children.
Miller’s additional theatrical credits include playing ‘Malcolm King’ in Nathan Louis Jackson’s “Broke-ology” at Lincoln Center, ‘Cory’ in August Wilson’s “Fences,” ‘G.H.’ in Paul Green and Richard Wright’s “Native Son” and ‘Marcus’ “Marcus, or the Secret of Sweet,” written by The New York Times Award winning playwright, Tarell Alvin McCraney. Miller continued to star in McCraney’s projects, “The Brothers Size,” “In the Red” and “Brown Water.”
Miller also appeared in the 2013 film, Wish You Well helmed by Darnell Martin, starring alongside Ellen Burstyn, Josh Lucas and Ned Bellamy.
On television, Miller can currently be seen on the CW’s critically acclaimed and Golden Globe Award winning show, “Jane the Virgin.” Miller plays twins, Roman and Aaron Zazo on the hit television series, where Roman is believed to be murdered in a hotel, causing tension for everyone. Aaron Zazo appears to be investigating his brother’s murder. However, it is later revealed that Aaron was the one who was murdered and Roman was impersonating him. Miller’s past television credits include guest appearances on “NCIS,” “Battle Creek,” “Stalker,” “Person of Interest,” “Golden Boy,” “Ironside,” “Vegas,” “Damages,” “How to Make it in America” and “Royal Pains.”
By the time Miller graduated high school, he amassed a score of awards and titles including being names a six-time Martin Luther King, Jr. Oratorical Winner and receiving the Key to the City of Orlando. Miller also holds three national titles in oratory: Elks of the World, NAACP and Modern Woodsman of America. Out of 8,500 students nationwide he won the National Foundation for the Advancement of the Arts Award. Miller also received the Presidential Scholar Award from President Bill Clinton.
